Ladies and Gentlemen,
Today I’m going to be speaking about something that is vitally important. I believe I’m not talking about certain groups of people but all of us. I divided my speech into three parts. First I’ll tell you my story, second I’ll try to explain why and third how to work out the problem through my story.
Just several days ago, I had a really hard time deciding whether I should join in this speech contest or not. I say it is “hard” because I did spend a lot of time thinking over it. I was thinking that like, “Should I take part in such a contest? It seems too difficult. I’m not really good at making speeches actually so I probably won’t do a good job and it would only be a waste of time and energy. I’m already very busy with my study, school activities and after school activities.” But finally I still entered. That was under the pressure of a few other students because they had already entered. And later I spend more time to think over my speech topic. Actually I’ve already imagined how I would prepare for it night and day after I decided to join in. However, I spend a lot more time to just sit in front of the computer and thought without writing a word, the seconds fly by, minutes fly by and hours fly by. One week elapsed, but I still didn’t write a word. Though I get a little nervous and anxiety, it seemed OK when there were still a few days from the deadline.
Yes, I know that’s a frustrating attitude for some of you who don’t like procrastination or living without firm deadlines, but it’s reality. I know lives of most people may not seem to be in a mess. However, Believe it or not, everyone can be a procrastinator no matter how great you are and what you have done. But I don’t mean that we should take procrastination for granted. In fact, we should not take our life for granted, we should not neglect it.
So, what is procrastination? Why do we call a person a procrastinator? In terminology, procrastination is putting off or delaying an action to a later time. And the procrastinator is someone who postpones work. If you’ve ever think to start doing something, or if you’ve ever decide to wait until tomorrow, or if you’ve ever make excuses for yourself to delay, you can be called a procrastinator. Why you protract, there are three the commonest causes. You can be a thrill-seeker, who wait to the last minute for the euphoric rush. You can be a avoider, who may be avoiding fear of failure or even fear of success, but in either case are very concerned with what others think of you. You can be a decisional procrastinator, who cannot make a decision, just like me. Also, you may be a poor time-manager and you may have a negative mindset about your work, just like me. And perfectionism plays an important part as well.
Back to the story, however, being closer to the deadline, I realized that I must stop protracting. You know, as usual I might begin to prepare even for this contest just on this Saturday as a result of procrastination so I would not be I here. But this time, I realized that I need to take actions right away. How can I start? The hardest step to take is the first one. I thought maybe I should ask for help instead of keeping this worry in myself just like before. I asked my father for advice. Though we spent one hour and I didn’t get any good idea. I spent three hours with my cousin to just sit and discuss and I didn’t accept his advice, either. But anyway, I felt sure about myself and I made the decision about my speech on my own. Second I began to take small steps to finish writing my speech, I know Rome was not built in a day. Third I try to stay away from the things that are attractive for me and can affect me, but of course I won’t stay away from computer. I just don’t want to distract myself. Fourth there’s also my mom who can supervise and urge me. And Of course I myself want to finish it as quickly as possible, too. But that night I work on until after ten o’clock p.m. That was Sunday evening. And the most terrible thing is that I even don’t finish my schoolwork until then. I must keep on working until midnight to finish my homework as a result of I didn’t do well in prioritizing. Prioritizing time has to do with procrastination. I think I know more about its importance after that night. This is the fifth point. In some way procrastination is the thief of time.
Finally I finished writing my speech and that’s me here. I am here to say, procrastinators are not certain groups of people. People from all over the world and are doing all kinds of things can be procrastinators. No matter you are students, nurses, engineers, accountants, scientists，teachers, students and phD students. And all of us can be procrastinators. What we can do is that try to change our attitude about the life. Thought about the way you really live in this world. Just don’t let procrastination became your lifestyle. Don’t let it cut across all domains of your life. Don’t let it make you be compromised. Don’t let it make you be the loser of life. For not regret about the road in your life, stop protracting now!
